Zine - "The Skinner box" by Tara Foley
Set within the dystopian framework of a skinner box, a contemporary symbol of social control and behaviorist theory, The Skinner Box is a free form work of speculative fiction which follows the evolutionary journey of a nameless protagonist as she searches for personal liberation from the Anthropocene. Through acts of love and bodily transformation, the protagonist recalibrates her DNA to a more liberated form which is free from her own metaphoric skinner box. A worshiper of blue whales, the protagonist incrementally transforms herself through gestures, intentions and dreams- passing these new traits onto future and present iterations of herself that exist throughout the quantum multiverse. In this way, she is mimicking the whales own journey from earth to sea 50 million years ago...
In its resemblance to a black hole, the whale eye is both a symbol of liberation and surveillance, all seeing and all knowing, both a door and a wall in the protagonists journey towards human evolution.
Tara Foley is a visual artist who shares a multidisciplinary practice with her partner Alexander Theodoropulos called Spyrodon.
